► Región histórica de Palestina, situada entre el mar Muerto y el Mediterráneo; 5 878 km2 y 915 000 h. En la época romana formó una procuración junto con Samaria e Idumea, y en el año 66 se convirtió en prov. romana anexionada a Siria. En 1967 fue ocupada por el ejército israelí. Forma con Samaria un territorio administrativo de Israel.

Región del sur de la antigua Palestina que fue gobernada sucesivamente por los persas, los griegos y los romanos.

Limitaba al norte con Samaria y al oeste con el mar Mediterráneo. Sucedió al reino hebreo de Judá, que fue destruido por los babilonios. El revivido reino de Judea fue establecido por los macabeos, que se resistieron a la represión del judaísmo por los gobernantes extranjeros. Las disputas familiares llevaron a la intervención romana en 63 BC. Bajo dominio romano, Herodes (el Grande) fue coronado rey de Judea en 37 BC Después de la muerte de Herodes, el país fue gobernado alternadamente por sus descendientes (ver Herodes Antipas; Herodes Agripa I) y por procuradores romanos. En 70 AD, como represalia por una rebelión judía, los romanos destruyeron Jerusalén, situada en la región. En la actualidad, los israelíes utilizan el nombre de Judea para describir aproximadamente la misma región de la actual Cisjordania.
